In this photo you can see the difference between the heron and the similar looking Great Egret. The egret does not have the neck plumes and their legs are all black. See the pink legs on this bird? Also you can see the blue nares (nose area). The heron also has the large head plumes that the egret does not have. This bird is in prime breeding plumage.
